Use your own dictionary for spell checking in XMind
Posted on July 7th, 2010 in Featured, XMind Basic | 5 Comments »
Nowadays, we are getting used to spell checking whenever we write something. In XMind, you may meet this kind issue, when editing a topic, you expect that spell checking can help you to perfect your spelling.
Now in XMind, the default spell checking is in English. But our users come from all over the world, they speak all kinds of languages. This default spell checking couldn’t meet the need of users who come from non-English speaking countries.
If you come from non-English speaking countries, you may probably want to use your own dictionary for spell checking.
Here one of our users shared a useful website for you to find your own dictionary:
http://www.winedt.org/Dict/
Download the very dictionary, change the extension to .dict , then add your own dictionary to XMind. (Edit > Preferences > Mind Map > Spelling)
After doing this, in XMind, you can enjoy spell checking for French, German, Spanish and etc. Very easy and useful, right?
Whenever you need this, do not hesitate to give it a try.

This seems to work. You only have to change the file format from .dic to .dict
Thanks for the hint

I have tried it with the German version. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with special characters.
All words with German Umlauts (“äöü”) are marked as incorrect without any suggestion for correction. This is even true for very basic words (i.e. “für” – German translation of “for”).
Maybe an encoding issue?

I had the same problem for Czech language. I had to rename (from .dic to .dict) and change encoding from cp 1250 (Windows platform) to utf8 (Linux). Perhaps it will help
It seems like it is only the english version that wants to work, I tried the french version with no luck
@rupert This should work. did you modify the download file name into .dict? Because this solution is reported by a user, which means it works for him. So could you please take another try.
