November 23, 2009 — XMind, a leader in mind mapping, visual thinking and collaboration software, today announced XMind 3.1, a major release of its award-winning product. New XMind will be more accessible to a broader audience and more powerful for professional users.
Here let’s know about the changes in this powerful new version:
New Features
- Default Theme, now makes it easy to use your favorite theme and even your own designed theme in new maps.
- Brainstorming Mode, help you get sparkles easily and save more time.
- Powerful Search, now works among all workbooks, which means you can fast find out useful information in all open XMind files.
- Relative Link, lets XMind be able to your assistant to manage files better.
- Export to PDF(Map), offers another option to share our maps with the world.
- Sorting Topics, helps us review the whole plan handily.
- Enhanced spellchecker, could be our great assistant in work. It not only tell us which is wrong, but also what the right is. Another good news is that we can add our own dictionary file(.dict) into XMind.
- XMind has the new online update system.
Fixed bugs
- Fishbone: If changing map’s structure to fishbone, add summary to a topic, drag and add more topic into this summary, click print, the layout is chaos. When reopening this map, the layout will be chaos too.
- Extract Theme: If we extract a theme(named theme 1), close and reopen xmind, then extract another theme(its name will be the theme 1 automatically,), change its name (like to be theme 2).Now when we reopen XMind, the theme 2 is lost.
- Context Menu: Only in the first sheet of the first workbook, select a topic and right-click mouse, you can see the full context menu(including markers, and structures).
- Upload map: If we add some special theme or style to a map and upload it to http://share.xmind.net/, then download this map and open it, all special theme and style will disappear.
- Import XMind 2008 file: If the map has wallpaper, that wallpaper will lose after being imported.
- Import FreeMind 0.9: Some Freemind 0.9 files can not be right imported into XMind.
- Extract style: Sometimes, your extracted style will disappear after re-launching XMind Pro.
- Export dialog and others works well on Ubuntu, esp 9.10.
- Copying multiple lines which begins with “Tab” will cause XMind crash.
- Some other bugs fixed.
Improvements
- You can open XMind files via double-click on Mac OS.
- XMind works fluently on Mac OS 10.4.
- Improve the Spell Check in XMind.
- Improve the Find and Replace.
- Improve the Notes.
- XMind Pro users can use XMind Pro offline.
- Some other improvements.

Sorry to say, but the FREE version has very few functions and pay U$49.00 a year to be able to extract one or to themes is just a little too much.
Another thing: the resolution of the exported images are simply bad.
谢谢支持!
用户自己添加的可以删除的。 请问您的说的是具体情况是?
@Andre XMind free edition has much more features than other free mind mapping software.
As for XMind Pro edition, it has many other advanced features too.
All of their features are listed at:
http://www.xmind.net/help/
You can also see how many special features in XMind Pro too.

@Stephen, who are you, are you in any way connected with XMind? and if so, would you care to make your affiliation with XMind public?
I’m not in any way connected with XMind, and I haven’t yet downloaded the new version, but I love the free version and its ease-of-use and available features are indeed unmatched by any other free MMS, and it even is a good replacement of some of the commercial MMS.
And it would be nice to get a translation of the chinese comments, I’d be interested in what they are saying – you could for example implement Google Translate, not perfect but good enough I think in these cases.
I just wish the Pro Version wouldn’t be subscription based, a one-off payment that would include bug fixes and small feature improvements (i.e. from 3 to 3.1 but without the really new features like brainstorming mode, export to PDF, and sorting topics), these would be included in a new major release (4) for which an upgrade fee would have to be paid (approx. 65% of full price).
Regards,
Daniel
Thanks for all of your hard work. I think your decision to go open source will continue to have a strong positive effect on XMind’s future. The visual presentation within XMind is outstanding.
I have tried all available free mind mapping software, and purchased a number of software packages. My conclusion was to build my maps in XMind. It’s definitely worth the subscription fee.
Until XMind decides to develop an interactive online service, I continue to use Mind Meister, which is limited by its visual presentation of maps, but allows expansion/ contraction of embedded maps by blog or site visitors. And until XMind decides to create a Droid app, I use the Thinking Space app to show many maps to clients from my phone. Both allow transfer of files through FreeMind export/import, which removes many map features, but allows the basic structure to be shared.
Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with XMind. I own a software development firm, and respect the phenomenal ongoing investment the folks at XMind make in creating their software.
Best wishes,
David
Please substitute “quickly” for “fast” in your descriptive messages. It will read more smoothly.
Thanks for continuing to upgrade Xmind. I concur with above comments and would buy Xmind Pro if I could buy it outright. Having a subscription has stopped me buying it. Hopefully you may consider incorporating an outright price as well as subscription.
Thanks
@Daniel I am in XMind Team. You may also notice that, I am a Writer of this blog too.
3.1 is not a perfect version. But it sill has many worth-to-use features and improvements. And 3.1 is a big upgrade from 3.0. Or we may use 3.0.x .
one-off payment for XMind? I guess that will need much more money.
XMind Team, made up of a few young persons, just hopes all people could be powered by visual thinking, and mind mapping.
As for the translation, let’s check if there is a easy way to let reader do that.
Stephen
@Quail Thanks for suggestions.
@David thank you for this kind comment. XMind would go better and better.
thank you for supporting XMind. We would consider about it.
Hi thanks for xmind. I would like to know when the eclipse version will be available. I am using eclipse all the day so I don’t see the point to use two different session.
Thank you
@albert XMind 3.1 will not have a special official version for eclipse.
@Stephen it’s a really bad news. Having two different eclipse at the same time is too much memory used for nothing. I hope that you will change your mind and that an eclipse plugin will be available in the future.
@albert thank you for your concern. We would consider about that. Yesterday, I find a user post a solution about using XMind in Eclipse. maybe you will be interesting. http://blog.xemantic.com/2009/11/xmind-as-eclipse-plugin.html
I agree with the others – I would buy Xmind if were a one-time payment rather than subscription-based.
Is there any documented issue on backward compatibility of xmind file formats?
@Chris you can take a look at:
http://code.google.com/p/xmind3/wiki/XMindFileFormat
I vote for an one-time payment too.
Tech Question:
Q
I agree with the others – I would buy XMind if it were a one-time payment rather than a subscription. I like the Pro features but will not buy it if they stop working when my subscription runs out.
试用了XMind后,立刻爱不释手,可是在使用中发现,附件功能似乎有bug,添加附件保存退出xmind后,再打开xmind,附件就无法打开了,不知道是不是我个人的问题?另外,为什么没有中文版的网站呢?
Incredible! Beautiful
XMind虽然有了免费版和Pro版本,但是不清楚专业版的那些功能,比如头脑风暴,不清楚这些功能,会导致很多用户驻足以免费版。
希望在下一个版本中,能够对Pro版本提供一定时间的试用。
Although Xmind has free and pro version, but i don’t know what the features of pro is, such as brain storm, it will stop someone at the free version.
I hope next version can provide a trial.
thanks you for supporting XMind. If there are the video about these features, it will be better.
There are quite a few laptop manufacturers that also recognize the need for higher RAM which is why there are some which offer upgrade worthy versions where you can increase the RAM to about 2 GB also. This is not only possible but also becoming increasingly common in the world of mini laptops.
I want to use Xmind as a collaborative program on line. How can I upload the map that I have created so that others can modify it?
Do the others have to have Xmind on their computers?
Also can I export Xmind to a program such as Power Point or Keynote?
I do I upload an entire worksheet with multiple pages with hyperlinks between them. I seem to be able to upload only one page with no active links.
I bought Pro thinking that this would be possible. I also thought that the PDF export would allow me to navigate between pages. I am not sure what Pro is good for,
Yes, they should install a XMind on their computers and download the maps. XMind Pro can export the map to PPT on windows system only at present.
oh, uploading the entire worksheet is in our plan. As I know, that PDF export may be available in short future.
XMind team should work harder and harder.
Stephen, hello.
I have a quenstion.
When i press tab, subtopic setting is always ‘underlind’ and ‘curve line’.
I love Rectangle and Elbow.
whenever add (sub)topic, i must change properties.
It’s inconvenient~
how can i fix ‘default setting’ about properties?(topic level1,2,3… etc)
@herb, XMind Pro has the default theme feature, which may meet your requirements.

Stephen hello.
It would be very nice if XMind have some more speed. Usually it use 100~200MB Memory(It is not difference comparing with other programs.)
But with many texts(Contents) when “moving screen” it have some lag(slow(?)) phenomenon. (screen drag->disply-> —-/—-/—-/—-/)
My computer hardware (core2duo 2g memory) is not so bad.
It is not hardware problem.
So I export xmind to mindjet(mindmanager) file, and open the file with mindjet that i saved.
And i checked the memory and it displayed 140MB memory share.
But mindjet had nearly no lag when i was moving the screen. it’s very fast.
Memory share was similar to xmind(140~150MB)(tested both xmind and mindmanager are lastest version).
why speed difference is occurs ?(when moving with mouse right button screen ->lag)?
help me ~
@herb Thanks for feedback. could you send us a sample for our test?
You are using Windows, yes?
Thank you for this post I know some local manufacturers which might looking for ways to increase their market reach for the goods they have
Hi. this is kind of an irregular question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you’ve got it?
I’ve bookmarked this because I found it notable. I would be very keen to hear more information on this. Excellent!
